Red Line Roots Interview

"These songs are all of a piece. They could be one big song if I worked at it a little bit more. I’ve been thinking about it a lot over the last few years, with a few things in my life that have gone really haywire and me trying to get a handle on that, I’ve been thinking a lot about interconnectedness. A good friend of mine is massively into quantum physics, and we’ll take these walks where he’ll clue me into all this stuff, which is not so good, because I get just enough of this stuff to be dangerous with it and decide that I know something about it. So all of this is swimming around in my head. But as I go along in my day to day, the process of mindfulness is really a process of seeing connections. Once you start looking hard enough you can find connections in places that you didn’t see them before."

The Bluegrass Situation Interview

"When I was growing up, I had my father in the front of the house. He grew up in the ‘30s, so his primary listening was around songs. He was interested in songs. His record collection was weird and shambolic, and he had a lot of 78s and old LPs from the ‘50s. He wasn’t into album-oriented anything. My sister, on the other hand, was listening to album-oriented rock from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The Grateful Dead and Captain Beefheart were playing in the back of the house. So I got interested in both of those things. But I find it hard to stop listening to an album after I’ve started. I have to let them play through, because you feel like you haven’t finished it somehow."

KUWS Session

Live on the Walt Dizzo show on KUWS on 9-6-2017.

WBRS "Between the Records" Session

Boiling Down Silas ; HoBo ; Over the Red Cedar ; I Ain't Dead Yet ; Jaybird
Recorded May 4th, 2017

Issue Magazine Feature

"Songs for me always come from personal spaces, but these songs have more of a personal edge to them. It was a fun record. Some friends of mine and I sat down and recorded it. We played the whole record live, basically, in a studio in Minneapolis, and I was pretty thrilled with the way it turned out. It has a real live and spontaneous feel to it. There’s more improvisational moments on this record than I’ve never had on any other record before, and I’m happy with that."

City Pages Cover Story

"Parr is no quitter. The lifelong Minnesotan has been making music for 42 years. He’s released 13 albums and built a fervent fan base at home and abroad, including seven tours in Australia and a dozen in Ireland. He played 272 road shows in 2016 alone. But his biggest achievement might be staying alive." Read the full article: Man of Constant Sorrow.

Peaceful Valley Video

""Peaceful Valley" came from me trying to write a sad song and it got much too sad, so I re-purposed the bulk of it with this kind of silly-sounding junk rag I'd been kicking around," Parr tells NPR. "The video fits the song to a tee, and according to my kids the character of me in the video is a dead ringer for the actual me." Watch the new video HERE courtesy of NPR Music.

Midwestern for Life

"The best shows I’ve ever played are like that one — when I feel like I’m really a part of this community, this kind of overgrown neighborhood, no matter where that happens. Usually it happens best in out-of-the-way places like Duluth or Menomonie, Wisconsin, or Fargo, North Dakota, or Ames, Iowa, or Hancock, Michigan. It feels like folks have made an effort to be there just like I have. The edge of the stage disappears a little and you find yourself having bits of conversation with audience members between the songs."

Rooster Download Page

"Those songs on Rooster, most of them were written around the time that most of King Earl was written, which was over a period of time from about 1997-2004. I had tried to write a short story which had turned into a short novel and I passed it to a friend who was also a very good writer and an honest man and he told me that it wasn’t very good although it had its moments. So I took those moments and made songs out of them..."

For Rooster we compiled an additional couple album's worth of demos, outtakes, soundtrack work, and folk songs from out-of-print compilations that Charlie titled the "Michigan Street Boxing Gym Sessions Outtakes." Get all three downloads in one spot HERE for a limited time.
