"Local artist Charlie Parr released his 14th album, Stumpjumper, during the week of the 17th annual Duluth Homegrown Music Festival. The release marks his debut on St. Paul's Red House Records and the first time he's recorded a solo project with the support of a backing band. We asked him about this career move into new territory when he joined us Live from Studio A on April 27, 2015."

Charlie Parr Finds a Band and a Label for His Personal New Album (City Pages)

"Red House — it's Spider John Koerner, it's Greg Brown, it's a lot of people that I really respect and like," says Parr. "I never really seriously thought about record labels. I just assumed that probably it's not for me — the way I record, and the way that my so-called music career has gone in a real organic fashion. It's a huge deal for me. It feels like a really good fit."

'Stumpjumper' is a new fork in a long and winding road (The Current)

""I'm like a balled-up Kleenex in a windstorm. I've just kind of gone wherever I felt like the day has wanted me to go." A folksinger both by trade and at heart, Duluth-based guitar maestro Charlie Parr is an embodiment of his genre: authenticity is his nature, simplicity is his mantra, and wisdom is his language."

"Charlie Parr, Alone with the Blues" (Star Tribune)

"No surprise, a lot of the new songs are inspired by his travels — not so much the landscapes and sights, but the people. “Over the Red Cedar,” for instance, came from a conversation he overheard at one tour stop about a guy who bought a fancy new truck, then lost his job the next day.

“My input into the conversation is the part about the Red Cedar,” Parr said. “You do your thing in life: You lose your job, you buy a truck and crash it, the trees keep growing, the river keeps going by. That helps me, knowing that in my life.”

New Daytrotter Session

1. Asa Jones' Blues
2. Frank Miller Blues
3. Funeral Road Blues
4. Falcon

"The men that Charlie Parr writes about are the kinds of guys who fit nowhere specifically and everywhere awkwardly. They are off-balance and still completely grounded, even when they're in a continuous loop of feeling like everything's shorting out and then calming down only long enough to conserve the needed energy to go haywire once again."

"Falcon" and "Stumpjumper" Premieres

"Today I drove through Moab, UT, and there was a Jeep rally going on. We called them 'stumpjumpers' when I was a kid. It reminded me of home and all the gear heads who lived near me constantly wrenching on their trucks, hanging around the parking lot, waiting for something to happen. I couldn't wait to join them."
Listen to "Stumpjumper" at The Bluegrass Situation.

"The song on Stumpjumper that I’m most happy with is “Falcon” because it is a song that I intended to write. A lot of times you don’t really mean to write a song — it’s like someone snuck up on you and attacked you; you didn’t really mean for it to happen. “Falcon,” on the other hand, I wanted to write that song. I’d read the book by John Tanner and it meant a lot to me."
